Summer has officially started and that means we are enjoying longer days. For some of us, it also means less sleep. If you find you are not getting the restful sleep you need, chiropractic care may be able to help. Not only will our team at Shields Chiropractic adjust your spine, allowing the body to naturally restore itself, we can also help with several other factors that may be affecting your sleep including:

  • Exercises and stretches
  • Pillow and mattress choice
  • Sleep position

Here’s what you need to know.

EVENING ROUTINES MATTER

If your sleep schedule needs improving, know that how you spend your evening matters. Our chiropractors can help you establish a relaxing evening routine to help you wind down from the day that includes relaxation methods and stretching that allow muscles to release tension so you can enjoy more restful sleep.

ADJUST YOUR SLEEP POSITION

Not only does your sleep position impact your sleep, but it also impacts your body as a whole. If you sleep on your stomach, it’s time for a change as this is one of the worst sleep positions for your body. Stomach sleeping does nothing to naturally help the body adjust itself and causes muscles, joints, and your back to become more restless. It can even cause strain on parts all over your body. Try switching your sleep position to your back or side.

CHECK YOUR MATTRESS AND PILLOWS

Goldilocks and the three bears weren’t the only ones with sleep preferences. While some patients prefer a softer mattress, when it comes to back support, firm is best. Softer mattresses sag with weight and allow your spine to shift as you sleep. They can also strain the body because as one area sinks lower than the other, strain is put on the areas that are around the sunken part of the mattress. Most people don’t want to spend big bucks on a mattress, but the investment is worth it considering how much time you spend sleeping!

You also need a good pillow along with a good mattress. As much as we’d all like to reach for the soft fluffy pillow (or the less expensive one), firmer is once again the best option. A firm pillow keeps your neck and head in proper alignment, which prevents strain.

VISIT US AT SHIELDS CHIROPRACTIC

When your body is in proper alignment and subluxations are removed from the spine, the central nervous system is better able to send messages between the brain and the rest of the body. That means all other body functions have a better ability to function optimally, including your ability to get restful sleep. Regular chiropractic care can help restore proper function and increase energy. To learn more about how your local Saginaw, MI chiropractor can help improve your sleep, click here to contact us.
