A crisp Fall morning is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and take a nice, long hike. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just out enjoying a stroll in nature, the last thing you want is for a joint or back injury to keep you off the trails. Here are our tips for a safe and healthy hike.

ALWAYS WEAR PROPER FOOTWEAR

We recommend supportive footwear and levelers for all aspects of life, but proper footwear is essential when hitting the trails. Good hiking boots can be a real lifesaver! Comfortable cushioning, ankle support, and a grippy treat are all must-haves for hiking boots. Be sure to do your research when purchasing a pair of hiking boots. Just because they look like they will work well doesn’t mean the functionality is there. Take advantage of knowledgable staff at outdoors stores, try on several pairs, and look up online reviews to help you find the perfect pit.

SUPPORT YOURSELF

Walking poles or a solid walking stick will help you maintain your balance and can avoid injury from a slip and fall. Even if you don’t take a tumble, struggling to maintain your balance can cause misaligned joints and strained muscles. A good hiking stick may be your back’s best friend!

HIKE TOGETHER

Hiking can be meditative and relaxing when going alone, but it can also be dangerous. If you are to fall and don’t have anyone around you assist you, you may be unable to get up and get the help or first aid that you need. Should you find yourself in an emergency situation, you’ll be happy to have a hiking buddy (and first aid kit) nearby.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Hiking is a hobby that requires strength and balance, neither of which you will have much of if you have subluxations and misaligned joints. Regular chiropractic care will keep your body in proper alignment, which will improve coordination and balance, reduce pain, and help your nervous system function optimally.
