One of the most common complaints American adults have is trouble sleeping. As a whole, we get far less sleep than we need, which results in excessive fatigue, more instances of illness, poor concentration, and other negative side effects. If you’re like so many other sufferers out there, you are at a loss for what to do. To improve you sleep, we will review common causes of sleeplessness and how chiropractic care can help.

INSOMNIA

  • Why Does It Happen? - Insomnia can happen for a number of reasons, and the particular cause may be hard to pinpoint. Some of the more common causes we see are emotional stress, certain medications, high levels of stress, and excessive worry.
  • Signs and Symptoms - The classic red flag of insomnia is being unable to fall asleep. You might be awake for hours staring up at the ceiling and hoping to finally just sleep. Another common sign is waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back to sleep. If you find yourself tossing and turning with little sleep success, insomnia may be your issue.

SLEEP APNEA

  • Why Does It Happen? - Sleep apnea happens when breathing is obstructed during sleep, which causes a brief pause in breathing. Sleep apnea can be caused by head trauma, the shape of the mouth and airways, or excessive weight.
  • Signs and Symptoms - A person suffering from sleep apnea can experience symptoms like waking up suddenly and gasping for air, extreme dry mouth upon waking, sleepiness during the day, snoring, and pauses in breathing through the night.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care is mostly understood as a way to manage back pain, and many fail to understand that it can help to improve your overall health and wellness, including your sleep habits. As chiropractors, we focus on the spine and correct misalignments, which boosts the spine’s health. So what does this have to do with sleep? It means tension and pain that build up in the spine can be released, making the body more comfortable and relaxed so it is easier to fall asleep.

Chiropractic also improves the function of the central nervous system. The central nervous system is key to an efficient and well-functioning body. The more efficient your body, the less energy you waste, and the easier it is for your mind and body to wind down and fall asleep.
